IN MEMORY OF DON COLDSMITH

Dear Readers,

Don Coldsmith passed away this morning.  He was the author of over 40 books, including our favorite series, the ”Spanish Bit Saga.”  He was one of our heroes.   It’s hard to imagine a world without Don’s kindness and sense of humor.  The universe is less today.  But he lived an amazing life.  When it’s all said and done, how many of us will be able to say that we saved lives, brought new lives into the world, fought for this country’s freedom, and changed the face of Western writing?  Few, we suspect.  He had a rare kind of soft-spoken courage, the stuff legends are made of.  We’re going to miss him very much.

If you’ve never read a Coldsmith novel, pick up “Runestone,” or “The Changing Wind.”  You’ll enjoy them.  We guarantee it.

And since today is June 25th, the anniversary of the battle of the Little Big Horn, we want to say definitively that Custer REALLY did have it coming.

Regards,

Michael and Kathleen

I shall miss the wonderful reading times from Mr Goldsmith, for, like you, he touched me with his written words. A few years back I ventured into the “Clan of the Cave Bear” world…since then I have absorbed many fine writings from those of you who write from knowledge. I love thinking about the societies you have described in your books…of past peoples who had feelings and did things differently, but somehow the same as we do. I am facinated and will never again read what my mother used to term a “smutty novel”. For those have never been more than an escape. I now read to learn. Thank you to Mr Goldsmith and to The Gears!

I am sorry I wrote Mr Coldsmiths name wrong. Just got a new lap top and learning how to spell all over again. Many positive thoughts to his Family and friends…

    Dear Mr. and Mrs. Gear,

I am sorry to hear about the passing of one of your favorite authors, and thank you for recommending his works.

I realize the next bit of this comment is a little off-topic, but I was not able to find a contact email address for you, so here I am!

Along with being a long-time reader and fan of your books, I am also currently Vice Chair of the first North American Discworld Convention in honor of Terry Pratchett, to be held Sept. 4-7, 2009 in Tempe, AZ.

While in a bookstore last week I saw some of your books and suddenly recalled that Terry had mentioned to me last August that (if I recall correctly) you are acquaintances. I realized that perhaps you might like to know about his upcoming convention and visit to the U.S., if you haven’t already heard about it. At any rate, if you are interested in learning more about the convention, full information is available at http://www.nadwcon.org, or you may feel free to contact me by email.

Thank you for your time, and wishing you all the best!

    Emily Whitten
